So I'm on the Ohio River near Cincinnati, and my dredge's main pump decided to cough up a whole boot.

A whole boot? What kind of shape is it in? I've pulled up old shoes before, but a full boot means someone had a real bad day on the river. Was it a work boot or a wader? That tells you if it was a fisherman or a dock worker. The real question is what else that pump is gonna cough up before you're done.

Yeah, perez.elliot has a point about the boot telling a story. I read an article last year about a crew up near Pittsburgh that pulled a whole leather miner's boot from the 1800s out of the mud, the leather was almost gone but the eyelets were still there. That river bottom is like a time capsule. You find a modern work boot, it's probably from a barge hand last season. A rotting wader boot? That's a fisherman who took an unexpected swim. Makes you wonder what's next, a hubcap or a whole bicycle.
