That chat with an old timer at the shop last Tuesday got me thinking about how we run our dredge cycles
He told me he always lets his cutter head spin for a full 30 seconds after he stops cutting to clear the ladder, and honestly I never thought about the buildup that way does anyone else give it that extra time or is it just wasted fuel?

Used to think that was just wasting diesel myself, but after fighting a clogged ladder one too many times I gave it a shot. Honestly, it's not as much extra fuel as you'd think and the time you save not digging out packed sand makes it worth it.

Buddy of mine tried that for a season and swore his cutterhead bearings lasted way longer. He was a stickler about it even when the rest of us were rushing to empty the hopper. You really notice the difference when you don't have to unclog the ladder every other shift?
