That old timer on the barge showed me something about suction curves

I used to think those suction curve charts were just engineer stuff, not for real work. But last month on a job in Mobile Bay, the cutter kept bogging down and I couldn't figure why. This guy who's been dredging since the 80s pointed at the gauge and said "your vacuum's telling you the line's plugged, not the pump." He walked me through reading the curve against my flow meter and sure enough, I was running too lean. Fixed it in 10 minutes. Anyone else ever get schooled by an old hand on something you brushed off before?

Got schooled so bad I felt like I was the one digging a hole.

So what exactly happened that made you feel that way? Was it something someone said or a specific moment when you knew you were out of your league? I've been in situations where I thought I knew what I was doing until someone with way more experience showed up. It's humbling for sure, but it sounds like you handled it okay since you're here talking about it. What was the one thing that really stuck with you from getting schooled like that?
