Back in the day I'd always prefill screw holes with mud before taping, but a guy on a job in Tacoma showed me a different method about 2 years ago. What's your go to?

Prefilling with mud is a solid method, but it can shrink and leave a small dimple. The trick I learned is to use a setting compound for that first fill, let it dry hard, then tape over it. It gives a much flatter finish and saves time on sanding later.

Setting type is the real game changer. That stuff dries rock hard and doesn't shrink back. I used to get those stupid dimples every time with all-purpose. Now I keep a bag of 45 for the deep fills. Tape just bridges over it smooth. Saves a ton of hassle on the second coat.
