Can we talk about mudding over old wallpaper glue?

I had a job in a 1950s house in Portland last Tuesday where the old owners just painted over wallpaper, leaving a ton of glue ridges. I skimmed over it with a fast-set compound, but it started to bubble in a few spots after a couple hours. What's your go-to method for sealing that kind of mess before you tape?

Ever try shellac primer first?

I tried it once and the fumes were so bad I primed myself out of the room.
