Had a ceiling job in a 1920s house that went from bad to worse in one afternoon.

The old plaster was crumbling so bad I had to strip it all, then found the joists were uneven by almost an inch and a half. I spent six hours just sistering in new wood and shimming before I could even think about hanging board. What's your fastest fix for a really wavy old ceiling when the homeowner doesn't want to drop it all the way?

Just shim and float it smooth.

Oh man, that sounds like a total nightmare. I've been there with those old plaster ceilings that just turn to dust when you touch them. Sistering and shimming for six hours is a brutal day, but honestly that's probably the right way to do it if they don't want a full tear-down.
