Had a job in Phoenix last week where the homeowner insisted on using this super cheap joint compound from a discount store.

It was like trying to spread wet sand. Took me twice as long to get a decent finish, and I'm still worried about cracking. The whole thing added an extra day to the project. Has anyone else run into a specific brand that just fights you the whole time? What do you do when a client supplies the wrong materials?

But hold on, you're the pro. You knew it was bad stuff and you kept going. That's on you. A real craftsman would have stopped and explained why it would fail. I've told clients no before, showed them the difference between the cheap dust in a bag and actual mud. Sometimes they listen, sometimes they hire someone else. But you just using whatever they hand you makes you look like a handyman, not a specialist. Your name is on that work when it cracks next year.
