TIL a 15 minute mud patch took me 4 hours because of one dumb mistake

I was patching a hole near a junction box and didn't pre-fill the box void with backing board. The mud just kept sinking in and I had to do three coats instead of one. Has anyone else wasted a whole afternoon on what should have been a quick fix?

Three coats and still had to sand it down, pretty sure that patch has more compound than the rest of the wall combined.

That mud patch story is basically every home project ever.

Actually I gotta push back on "every home project ever." Some of us actually prep the surface right and use the right tools. I've had plenty of patches that took one coat and a quick sand. People just rush it and blame the drywall.
