Hot take: That viral story about the guy who sued his neighbor over a lemon tree is actually way more complicated than people think
I dug into the court records after seeing it on Reddit and found out the lemon tree was technically on a shared easement line by 2 feet, not fully on the neighbor's property like the headlines all claimed, so has anyone else noticed how these stories always leave out the property survey details?

Did you pull the actual survey yourself or just read the judge's summary? I had a similar fence dispute and digging up the original plat map saved my ass.

Oh wait, hold on. The easement thing is actually a common misunderstanding. Most people don't realize that an easement gives you the right to use the land, not ownership of it, and the tree being on the easement line still means the neighbor owned the tree itself if the trunk was on their side of the property line. I saw the original survey map in the court docs too and the tree's trunk was definitely 2 feet over the line onto the neighbor's property, not just floating on the easement. The headlines are usually sloppy but the core facts about the tree's location are pretty solid if you actually read the judge's ruling. People just get mad when a story doesn't fit their "neighbor is crazy" narrative.
