TIL that the way I organize my news bookmarks is completely backwards from how I used to do it
For years I would save every wild story I found during the week into folders by date. If I saw something funny or messed up on a Tuesday, it went into a folder labeled 'October 15 links'. That worked fine until I tried to find something later. I could never remember what day I saw that story about the guy who tried to mail himself to Chicago. About six months ago I switched to bookmarking by topic instead, like 'Scams' or 'Animal disasters' or 'Government nonsense'. It took some getting used to but now I can pull up every weird city council meltdown from the last year in about thirty seconds. Has anyone else had to totally redo their system for keeping track of this stuff?

Is organizing bookmarks really that deep though? Like it's fine to just have a messy folder and use the search bar if you need something.

Oh come on @milabaker, I totally disagree. I used to have a messy bookmarks folder and searching for something was a gamble every time. I'd type in "recipe" and get fifty different links from three years ago with no context. Once I took an hour to sort them into folders like "work stuff," "home projects," and "random articles," it saved me so much time clicking around. Organizing takes a bit upfront but it pays off way more than digging through a pile of old links.
