My dad said a dead mall is a time capsule and he was right about the one in Akron
He told me that back in 2015 when we walked through Chapel Hill Mall and I rolled my eyes. Six years later I went back and saw the same arcade carpet from 1992 still there with the gum stains, and suddenly I got what he meant. Anyone else have a relative who called something years before it made sense?

That gum stain carpet detail is oddly specific but I'm not sure it's that deep. I've been to a few dead malls and sometimes it's just an old building nobody wants to deal with, not some profound time capsule moment. Linda's right about the closing date too, those timelines tend to get fuzzy in our heads. People get sentimental about places they barely went to and act like it's a metaphor for something. Maybe your dad was just making conversation in a parking lot, not dropping wisdom.

Chapel Hill Mall closed in 2020, not 2021, so your timeline is a bit off there. Still, that carpet sounds like it was straight out of a time warp.
