Talked to a security guard at the old Galleria and he changed my view on mall decline

Guy told me he's worked there since 1998 and said the food court died when they removed the fountain because kids stopped hanging out there. He said the fountain was the 'heartbeat' and once it went, stores followed within 18 months. Has anyone else noticed a weird detail like that being the real killer instead of online shopping?

Take a hard look at what draws people in naturally before making any big changes to a space.

Oh man, that's such a smart way to put it @skyler_craig! When you say "draws people in naturally" - are you talking more about the way the space feels physically, or the kind of conversations and interactions that happen there? I've seen spots try to totally change their vibe and lose the regulars who made it special in the first place.
