I was using the wrong kind of insulation in my attic for a full year.

My heating bill near the Westmount area was still crazy high, over $400 a month last winter. I finally had an energy audit done and the guy pointed out my old fiberglass batts were totally crushed and not doing anything. Anyone else in Edmonton get fooled by bad insulation advice from a big box store?

Oh man, did they sell you the paper-faced batts too? I got talked into that for my garage in Sherwood Park, said it was fine for the ceiling. Turns out the paper just traps moisture up there, totally wrecked it.

What did the moisture damage look like in the end, just stains or something worse? I've heard that paper facing is a real problem in spaces that aren't perfectly dry. Did you have to pull all of it out, or was there a way to fix it?
