Just read that Edmonton's average basement reno cost jumped 18% in a year

I was looking at a city report on building permits from the library website, and it said the average price for a finished basement here is now around $45,000. That's a huge jump from what my neighbor paid just a couple years back. Are people still finding ways to do these projects for less, or is that just the new normal?

Yeah, but that's an average, right? It gets pulled way up by those fancy full kitchen and bathroom jobs. A basic drywall and floor setup is still way cheaper if you're not trying to build a second apartment down there. Those city reports always make things sound worse than they are for a normal DIY-friendly project. It's only the new normal if you're paying top dollar for everything.

Man, you're totally right about that average being skewed... I just finished my own basement with basic drywall, some cheap laminate, and a simple ceiling. Spent maybe a third of what those reports quote. It's the full bathrooms and kitchenettes that send the cost into orbit.
