My contractor told me my choice of laminate for a basement suite was a 'future moisture headache' and he was right.
I swapped it for vinyl plank after his warning and saved myself a costly redo when a small pipe leak happened last winter, so has anyone else had a material choice totally saved by a pro's blunt advice?

That "future moisture headache" line is so spot on. It's not just about leaks either, a basement floor can just feel damp sometimes and laminate will swell up at the edges. A good pro points out the stuff you'd never think of until it's too late. My tile guy talked me out of a super slick bathroom floor by just saying "think about getting out of the shower." That simple image changed my whole plan.

Totally agree, that shower thought is a lifesaver lol. Had a friend put glossy tile in their kitchen and it's like an ice rink if you spill a drop of water. Good installers save you from yourself sometimes. They've seen all the ways things go wrong after the fact. Makes you realize paying for that experience is worth way more than just the labor.
