That big box store on 99 Street sold me the wrong furnace filter size

I went to the Home Show last weekend and a HVAC guy pointed out my filter was 1 inch too narrow. Been running it wrong for 6 months. Anyone else had a contractor catch a simple mistake like that?

Did the HVAC guy actually measure your filter slot or just eyeball it? In my experience those home show guys sometimes get it wrong.

We finally broke down and bought a measuring tool from the hardware store (the little metal tape ones are way more accurate). After that I measured three different spots inside the slot because they can be slightly uneven. Turned out the guy was off by a quarter inch on one side which let some air sneak by. Ended up ordering a custom size online and it was totally worth the few extra bucks. Now the filter fits snug and I can actually tell when it needs changing because there's no gaps.
