I was stripping wire with my lineman's pliers for years until a guy on a job in Boise asked why I didn't just use the strippers.

He pointed out the tiny nicks I was leaving in the copper, which I never even saw before. It finally clicked that I was making a weak spot every single time. How many of you started with a bad habit from your first helper days?

Remember stripping 12/2 with my teeth before someone gently suggested that might be a bad call.

Got a nice little jolt once that made my whole arm buzz, which was my sign to stop using my teeth as wire strippers. Felt like a real genius in that moment, I tell you. The taste of copper and that sharp zip are a pretty strong argument for buying the right tool. My dentist probably thanks me for the extra business, but my pride took the real hit.
