Met an apprentice yesterday who never pulled wire off a spool by hand

I was showing a 20 year old kid how to set up a tugger for a 400 amp service and he asked why we didn't just use the power tool to pull it all. He said his instructor showed him how to use the tugger for everything, even short runs behind a panel. Do you guys think we're losing something by skipping the manual part of the trade?

Nah man, that's not really losing something important. I mean, tuggers are great for big jobs obviously, but knowing how to pull wire by hand gives you a real feel for what you're working with. You can sense when a wire is getting bound up or about to kink in a way you just can't with power tools. Plus if you're only doing a short run and spend more time setting up the tugger than actually pulling, that's just wasted time.

Yeah man, I've seen the same thing. Had a helper ask why I didn't just use the impact driver to sink every screw instead of hand driving a few to get the feel for it.
