PSA: A plumber on a Reno job site said he always checks for a ground before touching any old metal box, and it clicked for me.
He told me, 'Your meter might say it's dead, but a shared neutral from a different circuit can still bite you,' which made me start double-checking every old work box I open now.

Yeah, a buddy of mine learned that the hard way. He got a good zap from an old light fixture he thought was safe, turned out it was back-fed from a different room's switch. Now he treats every wire like it's live until proven otherwise.

Scary, right? That back-fed stuff is no joke. Your buddy's got the right idea now for sure.
