Took me 4 hours to figure out a 3-way switch that should have taken 45 minutes

Had a 3-way that was acting like it was wired backwards but everything checked out on the meter. After running new travelers and still getting the same thing, I finally realized the previous guy had used a 4-way switch in the middle without it actually being a 4-way setup. Has anyone else run into a homeowner special that made a simple job into a nightmare?

@ellis.diana's got a point but sometimes you just gotta see it through. Four hours is a bargain if you walk away with the fix.

Is a messed up 3-way switch really worth 4 hours of your life though? I mean, yeah it's frustrating but at some point you gotta ask if your time is worth more than that. You probably could have just rewired it as a single pole and put a couple smart switches in for less than the cost of your blood pressure going through the roof. Not saying you're wrong to be annoyed, the previous guy clearly had no idea what they were doing. But in my experience, taking a step back and asking if the fix is actually that important saves a lot of headache. Just my two cents.
