Finally caved and bought a $40 hot air station for rework
It felt like a splurge, but it saved a whole laptop motherboard I would have written off. The old chip came off clean in under a minute. Anyone have a go-to brand for replacement nozzles?

Honestly the real game changer is the cheap Kapton tape. You can get a roll for like five bucks. That stuff keeps everything around your target chip from melting or lifting while you work. Without it, even a great station can wreck a board on your first try. The nozzles matter, but the prep work is what makes or breaks a salvage job.

Wait, FIVE bucks for Kapton tape? Where are you finding that? Last time I looked it was way more, even for the small rolls. That price is actually insane if it's the real deal.
