PSA: I was using way too much flux on SMD joints for years

Had a board from a 2021 Dell laptop come back with a weird white crust around a replaced chip. Customer said it failed again after six weeks. Realized the 'no clean' flux I was drowning the joints in wasn't fully cooking off with my old iron. Left conductive residue that slowly caused a short. Switched to a smaller needle bottle and just a tiny dot. Anyone else get bit by this before I felt like an idiot?

Tell that to my dead laptop board, @hernandez.jordan. Guess my flux soup was a bit too conductive.

That white crust is usually just harmless flux residue, in my experience.

Nah, that white crust can definitely cause problems if it doesn't fully bake off.
