Realized I've been using heat shrink wrong for 5 years

Was fixing a busted power cord on an old fan last week and noticed the heat shrink kept sliding off. Friend told me to roughen up the wire with sandpaper first before shrinking it down. Anyone else find little tricks like this that seem obvious after the fact?

Geez, I've been wrestling with slipping heat shrink for years and never thought to scuff it up. Guess I owe @graytorres a beer for that trick. Feel like I've been trying to put socks on a greased pig this whole time.

Scuff the wire a bit and clean it with alcohol before shrinking. That little bit of prep makes a huge difference in keeping the shrink tube locked in place. Honestly I've started doing it on everything even stuff that doesn't seem loose just so it holds better over time.
