Vent: My neighbor said my work is just 'replacing parts' and it got under my skin
We were talking over the fence yesterday and he asked how business was. I mentioned a tricky repair on a 2012 Samsung TV with a bad main board. He just shrugged and said, "Sounds like you just swap the broken piece, right?" It wasn't mean, but it hit different because he doesn't see the diagnosis part. I spent two hours with my meter and the service manual before I even ordered the $85 part. Has anyone else had to explain that it's not just plug and play?

That two hour diagnosis is the real job, the part swap is just the last step. People never see the work that goes into knowing which $85 part to order in the first place.

How many times have you had to explain that to someone? They just see the bill for the part and a few minutes of work... not the whole afternoon you spent tracking down the weird fault code or testing each piece of the system. It's like they think the answer just pops into your head.
