Warning: That old Otis traction job in the downtown bank building almost got me last Tuesday.
Honestly, I was replacing the governor rope and the whole machine room power dropped out for like 30 seconds. Tbh, it was just the building's backup generator doing its monthly test, but my heart stopped. Has anyone else had a surprise like that in an old building with shaky power?

Remember reading a forum post where a guy lost all car lighting in a middle of a hotel shaft during a generator switch. Scary stuff. I mean, @hollym12 is right about being alone up there, it makes every little blip ten times worse. Those old systems just do whatever they want sometimes. Makes you realize how much we trust power that isn't really ours to control. Glad yours was just a test and nothing actually broke.

Right? Going up alone in one of those old shafts is no joke. Every little noise or flicker makes your stomach drop. Glad it was just a test but that kind of quiet trust in the system gets shaken real fast when you're the only one up there.
