A guy at the hardware store told me my method for finding studs was basically witchcraft

He said my trick of tapping the wall and listening for a 'thud' was unreliable, so I bought a $20 Franklin Sensors stud finder and now my shelves don't wobble anymore, what's the most oddly specific piece of advice that actually fixed a daily chore for you?
