Lost $45 on a 'smart' plant pot that killed my fern in 2 weeks
I bought one of those self-watering planters from a Kickstarter back in March, figured it would save me from forgetting to water my fern. The thing had a sensor and an app, but it kept telling me the soil was too wet so I trusted it and didn't water for almost 10 days. My fern was completely brown and crispy by the time I checked the soil with my finger, which was bone dry. Anyone else fall for a gadget that just made things worse?

Lol honestly that's so typical, my smart garden gadget basically gaslit me into killing a succulent once. The app kept saying "perfect moisture level" while the dirt was literally cracking at the bottom of the pot. I wanted to feel like a tech-savvy plant parent but ended up feeling like I just paid for a fancy way to neglect things faster. Your fern didn't stand a chance against that sensor, mine was doomed from day one too. Now I just poke my finger in the dirt and water when it feels right, no app needed.

Perfect moisture level" while the dirt is cracking... that is so painfully accurate it hurts lol. It's like these gadgets are designed to tell you what you wanna hear instead of what's actually happening in the pot. I swear my old smart planter would've told me my fern was thriving while it was actively turning into a brown skeleton.
You know what's wild too? I actually tried 3 different brands of those sensors before giving up and just going back to the finger test. Every single one had some kind of glitch where it would randomly lose connection or give conflicting readings. Like how is a $60 moisture meter less reliable than sticking my thumb in the dirt for 2 seconds?
At this point I'm convinced these companies just slap "smart" on anything with a blinking light and hope we don't notice they're basically toys for adults who want to pretend they're futuristic plant parents. The finger method never lies, even if it does get dirt under your nails sometimes.
