My neighbor's mailbox got a weird dent and then it was gone

Last Thursday, the blue metal box on the corner had a big, fist-sized dent on the side, like someone punched it. Yesterday morning, the whole mailbox was just gone, leaving only the post in the ground. Did the mail carrier report it, or did someone just take it away?

Honestly, is a missing mailbox that big of a deal? Stuff gets damaged and replaced all the time. Maybe the post office just swapped it out because of the dent.
