I used to think a hoof stand was just for show until a draft horse in Kentucky leaned on me

About two years back, I was trimming a Percheron without really using the stand, just holding the hoof up, and the big guy decided to take a nap on my shoulder for a solid minute. Now I always set the stand at the right height and lock it in place before I even pick up the foot. Anyone else have a horse teach them a lesson about gear the hard way?

That "hard way" lesson is something I see all the time. People skip the safety step because the job seems quick and easy, until one small slip changes everything. It's why I never get under a car without jack stands, even for just a second.

My old farrier laughed at stands until a Belgian leaned.
