Old timer told me to soak my rasps in vinegar overnight...
A farrier I met at a clinic in Ohio swore that soaking my rasps in white vinegar overnight would keep them sharp way longer than just wiping them down with oil. I tried it for two months and honestly my rasps are lasting maybe 50% more shoeing before they need replacing. Anyone else ever tried this or am I just getting lucky so far?

Wait so is this actually a thing? I tried the vinegar trick about six months ago after reading some old farrier forum post from like 2008 and honestly I thought I was nuts but my rasp is still cutting clean after like eight shoes. Before I was lucky to get four shoes out of a new one before it started dragging. I do it every Sunday now, just drop em in a mason jar full of white vinegar overnight and rinse em off in the morning with hot water. Tried apple cider vinegar once and it worked fine too but smelled like a salad. I'm sold on it.

My grandfather was a carpenter and he swore by white vinegar for his chisels, just a shallow dish overnight once a week. I tried it on my wood rasps and got a solid three extra months out of a set before they started grabbing.
