Shoutout to the old-timer who saw me struggling with a hot shoe
I was at a clinic in Boise trying to shape a shoe for a draft cross, and the steel cooled too fast. A guy named Walt walked over, said 'Kid, your fire's too clean,' and showed me how to bank the coke differently. Anyone have other tricks for keeping a good working heat on bigger shoes?

Man, that feeling is the worst. You get that perfect orange heat and then it just vanishes. Walt was right about a dirty fire for big steel. I'll sometimes nestle the shoe right down in the heart of the coke and then heap more around the sides like a little oven. It traps the heat way better.
