A professor told me my color palettes were 'emotionally flat' and it stung...
It was during a portfolio review at the community college, and she pointed at a series of gray and beige sketches. She said, 'You're designing for mannequins, not people... where's the joy?' I went home and literally threw out my old mood boards. Now I start every collection by picking one strong feeling, like 'relief after rain' or 'morning sunlight in a kitchen', and build colors from there. Has anyone else gotten feedback that completely flipped their process around?

Feel that sting right in my chest, ouch. That kind of feedback can really knock the wind out of you. But wow, turning it into your new starting point with feelings is honestly brilliant. It sounds like you found a way to make your work truly yours, which is the best kind of flip.

My art teacher in high school said something similar about my still lifes. It felt like a gut punch at the time, but it forced me to look at things differently. Your method of starting with a feeling sounds way more alive.
