Hot take: I used to sketch everything on paper before cutting fabric. Now I just go for it.

For years, I'd spend hours on detailed drawings for every piece. About six months ago, I was working on a jacket idea and just started cutting into some scrap denim. The shape came out way more interesting than my sketch. Now I drape and cut first, maybe sketch a rough idea after. It feels more like real making. Anyone else skip the sketch phase sometimes?

Ever try just pinning the fabric on the mannequin and cutting it while it's still up there? I found that gets you some wild shapes you'd never draw.

Same. I was a total sketch-first guy until recently.

@paulc93 I get why people like that approach, but I actually see it different. For me, sketching first helps me figure out if the proportions work before i waste any fabric. I messed up a coat real bad last year by just diving into cutting and had to scrap a lot of expensive wool. Having a rough drawing saves me from those expensive mistakes, even if the final piece changes a lot.
