My sister told me to stop trying to make a 'timeless' coat and just make something fun

She said it last fall when I was stuck on a wool coat design for three weeks, trying to make it perfect for every situation. I finally gave up and made a bright blue peacoat with big, mismatched buttons from an old jar. Wore it to a friend's thing in November and got three people asking where they could get one. Have you ever been given advice that seemed wrong but actually got you moving on a project?

Ever get told to just pick a color and roll with it? My art teacher said that when I was stuck on a sketch, and @jade47 is right about it being permission to stop overthinking. Honestly, slapping down that first ugly green just got the whole thing moving.

Remember my friend telling me to just buy a plant instead of researching perfect indoor trees for a year. Bought a weird cactus that looks like a bunch of fingers, and it's the only thing I haven't killed. Sometimes the bad advice is just permission to stop overthinking, right?

That cactus story is perfect. It's like we get stuck trying to make the "right" choice and forget to just make any choice. What's the weirdest or most random thing you've bought on a whim that actually worked out great?
