Hidden spring turned my fence job into a swimming pool

I dug all the post holes on a sunny afternoon. Overnight rain revealed a spring that flooded everything. Any tricks for spotting wet ground before you start digging?

Well, congrats on the new water feature... hope you didn't plan on a dry fence. Sometimes you can spot wet ground by the way grass looks extra green and sad, but springs are sneaky. I once saw a guy try the old 'stick in the dirt' trick and still hit a pipe. Your best bet might just be digging after a drought or in a desert. Otherwise, you're basically playing lottery with your yard... and losing, like your fence turned pool.

Thing is, pipes aren't just where the ground's wet.

But how often does this actually happen? Most yards don't have random pipes just waiting to get hit. Seems like a lot of fear over a pretty rare event. People dig post holes all the time without turning their yard into a swimming pool. The advice is good for being careful, but it's not like every shovel strike ends in disaster.
