I tried using a 4x4 for a corner post in heavy clay and it actually held fine
Everyone at the yard told me to always use a 6x6 for a corner, but I was in a pinch on a job in Springfield and used a treated 4x4 with extra concrete. That was three years ago, and the fence hasn't budged an inch. Has anyone else had a corner post hold up with a smaller size than recommended?

My uncle in Florida used a 4x4 for his gate post, which is basically a corner. That was maybe ten years back, and it's still solid. He just packed the clay real tight around it.

Yeah, packing clay tight can work surprisingly well in some spots. Read an old forestry bulletin that said dense clay, when it stays dry, can hold a post almost like concrete. The big worry is always water getting in and freezing, or just making things rot faster. His uncle in Florida probably avoids the worst of that freeze-thaw cycle.
