Unpopular opinion: I think we should stop telling new guys to always use a 4-foot level for setting posts.
A veteran builder from my hometown, who's put up over 5 miles of fence, told me he uses a 6-foot level for the first post and a string line for the rest, arguing it's faster and just as true, which made me question a rule I've followed for years.

That guy with 5 miles of fence has a point. We get so stuck on one way of doing things. A string line is dead straight if you set it right, way faster than checking every single post with a big level. The first post has to be perfect, sure. After that, you're just matching a line. Seems like gatekeeping a tool more than giving good advice.

Honestly, that string line method is just smart work, not cutting corners. Anthony_lane55 gets it too, some folks act like extra steps always mean better work. Tbh, a straight line is a straight line no matter how you check it.
