Wait, are you saying you used to sew WITHOUT a tensioner? My old machine didn't have one and everything was a mess. I tried making a simple tote bag and the bottom thread was all loopy and loose. Honestly, how much of that was the machine and how much was just learning the basics? My grandma's old Singer didn't have one either, and she made perfect seams by just adjusting the presser foot pressure and thread type. It took practice, but it was totally doable.
