I finally gave up on airlocks after my kimchi turned out great
I always heard you need airlocks to avoid mold, but my kimchi fermented perfectly with just a cloth cover. Letting it breathe a bit seems to help more than sealing it tight.

From what I've heard, traditional kimchi often uses cloth covers instead of airlocks. It lets the jar breathe a bit, which can help in my experience. Your mileage may vary, but it's a common approach.

Heard that cloth covers are the old-school way to avoid explosions, which sounds over the top but makes sense.

Yikes, cloth covers can still cause explosions.
