Pro tip: that $25 pH meter from the hardware store is not worth the trouble

I bought one to check my sauerkraut brine, thinking it would help me get the acidity right. The readings jumped all over the place and it stopped working after two uses. What's a good, cheap way to test pH for a home fermenter?

Litmus paper strips are cheap and reliable for checking sauerkraut.

Stick with litmus paper strips instead. They're cheap, consistent, and way easier to deal with than those finicky digital meters that never seem to calibrate right. I've been using the same pack for over a year and they never let me down.
