PSA: A cheap yellow filter saved my foggy morning shots

I was shooting a roll of HP5 at a lake near my town last month, and the morning fog made everything look flat and dull. On a whim, I screwed on a $15 yellow filter I'd bought years ago, and it cut right through the haze, giving the sky some real depth. Has anyone else tried this trick with black and white film in bad weather?

Oh man, that reminds me of shooting foggy woods with a red filter once.

Yeah, @kevin_sullivan, that red filter move is either pure genius or a total disaster, no in between. I tried it once and my foggy pines looked like a weird Martian forest, not moody at all. Ended up with these crazy dark skies and trees that looked like they were made of charcoal. Sometimes the classic advice just makes everything look like a bad horror movie poster. What did your shots actually turn out like?
