My mom called our new house a 'starter home' and it made me mad

We just closed on our first place, a little 2-bed in Tacoma, and I was so proud. Then my mom visited and said, "Oh, it's a cute starter home!" It hit me wrong because we saved for 5 years for this. It's not just a stepping stone to her, it's our home. Did anyone else get a comment that rubbed them the wrong way after buying?

Congrats on the house, that's huge! My mother-in-law called our first place a "training wheels house." I told her we were planning to ride this bike right into the ground. Some people just can't help but see everything as a temporary stop on the way to something bigger. It completely misses the point of having your own space. You earned that key, and it's your home, period.

I totally get being upset about the "starter home" thing. My aunt said something similar about our condo. I just told her straight up, "This isn't a starter for us, it's the finish line we worked for." Setting that boundary right away really helped.
