Rant: Zoning rules almost killed my home office plans

I bought a house thinking I could run my business from home, but the zoning didn't allow it. I found out by checking with the city planning office before signing. What other hidden rules should first-time buyers look into?

Yeah, the_mila is right about rules changing... I had a neighbor get hit with a new rule about how many cars could be parked on the street. The real kicker is looking into HOA rules if your neighborhood has one, they can be way stricter than city zoning. Also check for any old permits on the property that might be grandfathered in, that saved me once. It's a pain, but you gotta keep an eye on the city council meeting notes sometimes.

Jesse_carr23 has a point on timing, but what if the rules change after you buy. Cities update codes all the time, adding stuff like parking permits or noise limits. You can't just check once and forget it.

Actually, you avoided the big problem by checking first (smart move). The title says it almost killed your plans, but checking beforehand means it didn't. That timing is the most important hidden rule of all.
