Heard a guy at the Springfield flea market bragging about his 'untested' electronics haul. He bought a whole box for $30. Plugged one in at home. Smoke. Fried his outlet.

My uncle did the same thing with a garage sale VCR back in 2010... cost him two hundred bucks for an electrician. It feels like this weird modern gamble, where the chance of a cheap score totally blinds people to the obvious risk. You see it with those mystery boxes online too, just junk dressed up as potential treasure. That puff of smoke is basically the universe charging a stupid tax.

Man, that's rough. @felix385 is right about the stupid tax, it's a perfect way to put it. My buddy tried that with a cheap power strip from a bin, same smoky result. It's like people forget electricity can actually start fires.
