My vintage lamp find gave up after 3 days of use

Picked up this cool brass lamp at a flea market outside Portland for 8 bucks, thought I scored big. Got it home, cleaned it up, and on the third evening the wiring just fried with a pop and a little smoke. Anyone know a good way to rewire old lamps without wrecking the patina?

Cleaned it up" could be the problem. If you used any chemical cleaner near the socket or switch, it might have dripped inside and caused the short.

Ha, @the_joel beat me to it. I did the exact same thing with an old banker's lamp last year, ruined a perfectly good patina in seconds.
