Vent: Spent $50 on a 'vintage' radio that was just a broken clock in a box
I saw this cool looking wooden radio at the Alameda flea market a while back... the guy said it was from the 40s and just needed a little work. Paid him cash and got it home. Opened it up and there was no radio inside, just an old broken alarm clock wired to the speaker. Total junk. I was out the fifty bucks and felt pretty dumb. Anyone ever get tricked by something that looked good on the outside?

Oh man, that's rough. I once bought a "solid oak" table that turned out to be particleboard with a really convincing sticker.

It's crazy how good those stickers have gotten. The real trick is checking the weight, a solid wood piece has a certain heft you can't fake. Makes you wonder if they're counting on people not picking it up before buying. That sticker tech probably costs more than just using a cheaper wood veneer.
