Breaking from the glue-down crowd in residential jobs

Most installers I talk to insist glue-down is the only way to go for a pro finish, but I disagree for house work. Glue is messy, locks you in, and if the subfloor isn't perfect, you get callbacks. Last month, I had to fix a single plank in a glued vinyl job and it took hours of careful cutting. With a floating floor, I can pop that plank out and slide a new one in fast. Sure, glue might stick better in a mall, but homes need flexibility for repairs or changes. I save time and my clients save money, and the floors still look great years later.

In Boston, glue-down prevents winter floor gaps.

Seriously, GLUE-DOWN stopped my floor gaps completely during last year's freeze.

Actually, read a piece last week about how floating floors are getting way better for temp changes. @the_vera is right that glue-down stops gaps in cold snaps, but in houses, things shift more than we think. Heard from a buddy who does repairs that glued floors are a nightmare to fix after water damage. With floating, you can swap planks without wrecking the whole floor. For homes, that kind of flexibility just makes more sense long-term. Plus, most clients don't want to be locked into one layout forever.
