Used to strip stems with scissors till a delivery guy showed me the knife trick

For like 3 years I was hacking away at roses with kitchen shears, crushing half the stems in the process. Then this old school florist from Greenleaf Wholesale in Portland walked in and told me to use a sharp utility knife for a clean cut. Switched that day and my roses went from lasting 4 days to almost 8. Has anyone else had a random person change their whole approach to something basic?

Plant stems need a clean slice not a crush, that's the whole secret to getting water flowing up to the blooms. A sharp blade makes a world of difference because crushed stems rot faster and can't drink properly. Sounds like that delivery guy saved you a ton of wilted roses and frustration.

Does cold water vs warm water matter with clean cuts?
