Found a 2008 thread about a haunted bowling alley scoreboard and decided to check it out myself.

Drove to the old alley in Springfield last weekend, and the place is a dentist's office now. The only weird thing I saw was a very confused receptionist. Anyone have a favorite old 'haunted local business' forum story that turned out to be totally wrong?

That "haunted local business" thing is just our brains filling in blanks.

My cousin worked at that old movie theater on Main Street for years. He said every single new employee would hear footsteps in the empty balcony by their second week. It's wild how the same story gets told over and over until it feels totally real. Our brains are just pattern making machines on overdrive. You hear a weird noise in a creepy place and the story does the rest.

@ivangrant brought up a good point about how stories spread, but I'm not totally sold on the brain filling in blanks explanation. When a dozen different people hear the same specific sound in the same spot without ever talking to each other, that's a pattern worth paying attention to. Our brains are definitely pattern machines, but they're not that good at accidentally creating identical stories from random noises. Maybe there's something physical going on like old pipes or loose floorboards, but writing it off as imagination feels like a shortcut.
