I finally realized I'd been reading a 2008 forum thread about 'the best browser' where everyone was arguing over Netscape Navigator.
The moment of truth came when someone earnestly suggested trying the new 'Google Chrome Beta' to see if it was any good.

Notice how people like @nathan_thompson62 say this about old news, but then the same stuff happens again. We stop talking about a problem and act shocked when it comes back, like with all these price hikes lately. Forgetting why something mattered just sets us up to repeat it.
